The words "Go Green" can nowadays be seen almost everywhere including schools, government organizations, hospitals etc. They simply mean to live an environmentally friendly life that will not be harmful for the environment. This will involve using only environmentally friendly products and protect our nature from getting degraded. To promote this most of the international companies have now started producing green products. Green products are those which are manufactured using only environmentally friendly products that can be easily recycled. Even electronic items are nowadays tagged as green products which means they are manufactured using only environmentally friendly products.

Petroleum and diesel oils are now being replaced by biodiesel which is an environmentally friendly product. This will definitely help to reduce the degradation of our environment which is currently going on at a high level. The main objective of the “ Go Green ” message is to reduce the environmental pollution.

Apart from producing and using green products…

…organizations are also focusing on developing environmentally friendly buildings, factories and housing societies. Factories are nowadays constructed far away from cities and in such a way that proper techniques are used for releasing the harmful smoke released from them. Even industries have now started employing non-renewable energy resources like solar energy, wind energy, hydro energy and geo-thermal energy as alternative energy resources.

Many international organizations have been established for protecting the environment. Strict rules and regulations have been introduced in many countries for protecting the environment. Campaigns are also being conducted by students all over the world to spread the message of saving the environment. Social networks like Facebook and twitter are also being utilized as a good platform for sharing the "Go Green" message.

The energy that is developed by using wind as a potential resource is known as wind energy. The movement of air occurs as a result of difference in the atmospheric pressure which is again the result of regional variation in the temperature at a given period of time. Land and sea have different heating and cooling systems so during the day land gets heated at a faster rate than the water which results in the air over the land having a higher temperature. At the same time the temperature over sea is quite lower which results in the air over the sea moving at a faster rate towards the land. This wind energy can be optimally for many useful purposes.

The coastal areas and the remote hill regions having potential wind energy are selected for placing windmills, to generate electricity. This electricity can be used for suppling power to remote areas and villages. It has the following advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages

It can be easily harnessed as compared to other energy resources.

It is available free of cost.

It is Eco-friendly as it does not contribute in creating any forms of pollution.

It can be easily obtained in the hilly as well as remote areas.

The cost of installation and recurring costs are quite affordable.

Disadvantages

The generation of energy depends on the wind velocity which indicates that it will not be available regularly and so is unreliable.

It needs some battery backup to store the energy which increases the production cost.

This energy can be used only for small locality and not for large urban areas.

Sun is the main source of inexhaustible and uncountable resource of energy. Solar energy is received in the form of cosmic radiation. The solar energy that we receive can be converted into many forms for utilization. The conversion of solar energy to thermal energy takes place through direct conversion while conversion to Photo conversion takes place through indirect conversion. Devices like solar water heater, solar cooker and solar house heater are powered using solar energy. To produce salt from oceanic water this energy can be used in the form of solar evaporator. It can also be used for the development of green house gases in areas like temperate region where the inside temperature is controlled. Also, solar energy is regarded as the safest form of energy resource from the view point of environmental protection. Solar energy also provides numerous advantages as compared to other renewable energy resources. Some of the important advantages are as follows.

- The solar equipments do not require any serious installation or costly maintenance. e.g. Solar water heater and solar cooker.

- The nutritional value food is preserved while using solar cookers.

- The space requirements for placing solar equipment is not too large.

- Most importantly solar equipments do not make any noise pollution which is quite beneficial in reducing the environmental pollution.

The One and Only Trouble

Having read about the numerous advantages of solar energy, its only disadvantage is that Solar energy would be available only during day time. However, to overcome this limitation various advanced techniques are being developed so that solar cells can store large amount of solar energy to be used when sunlight is not available.

Hydro energy is the most important renewable energy resource. It has a lot of advantages over other energy resources . Also, it is one of the pollution free energy resource. Most of the hydro-electric power plants that generate electricity are built in remote areas that are far away from the cities. Most importantly this is beacause it needs particular geographical conditions to generate hydel power. Some of the necessary environmental conditions are as follows.

Necessary Environmental conditions

A perineal supply of water or dam should be present for artificial storage of water. The temperature of the region should not go below the freezing point. So in the arctic regions, it is not possible to create a hydel power generator.

The region must have a steep slope for generating velocity in the surface water or an artificial dam should be used for generating this velocity.

The region must have the potentials of industrial development, because the generation of hydel power is quite cheap but the carrying cost of electricity through the copper wire or aluminum wire is too high.

Pen-stocks should be set up in the dam wall so that water falls at a high velocity. As the velocity of water increases the amount of electricity generated per unit time will also be increased.

Turbines should be set up at the ground level of the dam. Thus when water will flows at high velocity through the pipeline, the turbine will start rotating. This rotation of turbines will finally generate electricity.

Today, hydro energy is used as the main resource for generating electricity, which is the most important and widely used energy resource.

The layer above the troposphere is called as Stratosphere in which a separate layer has been formed at a height between 15 and 30 kilometers from the sea level. It is called as ozono-sphere. Ozone (O3) is a gas which has the capacity to absorb large proportion of ultraviolet radiation and so the biosphere has been developed on land surface and water bodies. This ultraviolet radiation is very much toxic for the organic matter. The layer of ozone is getting depleted due to emission of gases from the industries and mainly the cooling industries.

Dissociation of Chloroflurocarbons

The chlorine atoms released by the dissociation of chloroflurocarbons (CFCs) are responsible for the depletion of the ozone layer. The release of CFC is confined to many activities which includes refrigeration, air conditioning, extinguishing fires, cleaning solvents in industries, blowing agents in plastic industries and solvents used in the paint industry. It has been found that one chlorine atom is capable of destroying up-to one million ozone molecules.

If the above mentioned activities continues for a longer period of time, then the natural filter of ozone layer will be totally lost and destroyed. By minimizing the use of ferrous and halogens the depletion of ozone can be reduced. Also, by using Eco-friendly chemicals, CFC can be replaced and ozone layer depletion can be curbed up to some extent. However it should be noted that Eco-friendly chemicals are expensive and hence the cost of production of cooling equipments will be gradually increased. Finally by imposing a regulatory ban on the use of refrigeration and air-conditioners, the formation of CFC can be reduced and the depletion of ozone layer can be put under control.

Global warming can be explained in simple words as the increase in temperature of the lower layer of the atmosphere. Green house gases like carbon-dioxide, methane and nitrogen-oxides have the capacity to hold the outgoing energy in terms of heat, released from the surface of the earth. Even the water-vapour in the atmosphere has the capacity to hold the heat released from the surface of the earth. Due to these reasons the temperature on the surface of the earth gradually increases which is known as Global warming. Industrialization and Urbanization are the major causes of Global warming. Combustion of fossil fuels like oil and coal in the thermal power plants, industries and automobiles often releases green houses gases like carbon-dioxide which increases the atmospheric temperature.

Global warming is a serious threat for the natural environment as it will change its natural cycle and will ultimately destroy it. Rise in atmospheric temperature and melting of snow in the arctic region are some of the examples of the direct effects of global warming on the environment.

What if Global warming continues?

If Global warming continues then some of the largest urban centers and industrial areas like Shanghai, New York and Tokyo would be under sea-water in the near future. The solution for this problem is not quite easy because the developed country's economies are strongly tied with the hydrocarbon fuel which is one of the major causes of Global warming.

However, certain control measures can be taken to prevent such problems in future. By using alternative sources of energy, the emission of carbon-dioxide can be decreased. The non-conventional energy resources like solar, wind, tidal, geo-thermal or bio-based energy resources can serve as a good alternative. Thus by using such non-conventional sources of energy even the environmental pollution can be curbed upto a great extent.

Every year 10th day of August is celebrated as International Biodiesel day. During the 1850s two scientists named as E. Duffy and J. Patrick had designed the first diesel engine. After that another renowned scientist named as Rudolf Diesel built a prime model of diesel engine with a 10 feet iron cylinder and flywheel at its base. This model was powered for the first time on August 10, 1893 in Augsburg, Germany. Thereafter this day is celebrated as International biodiesel day.

Many people believe that Diesel had designed this engine in such a manner that it can run on peanut oil. However, fact is that model designed by diesel could not run on peanut oil. It has been reported that Daniel once said "the use of vegetable oils for engine fuels may seem insignificant today but such oils may become, in the course of time, as important as petroleum and the coal-tar products of the present time".

Vegetable Oil and Animal fat

Although, petroleum based fuels were widely used during those days, the demand for vegetable oil or animal fats based diesel oils were really high. Records have shown that during the 1920s and 1930s countries like Italy, France, United Kingdom, Portugal, Germany, Argentina, Japan, Brazil and China had tested and used animal fat or vegetable oil based diesel oils which is presently known as biodiesel. However, due to some scientific reasons those oils were no longer used. Also, these oils were poorly efficient as compared to normal petroleum based diesel oils. Thus as a tribute to our environment every year this day many NGOs and local organizations around the world conduct various activities that are beneficial for the environment.

The Green Party of United States is actually a political party in US who focuses on activities that will help improve the quality of the environment. Currently US has two green parties among which Green party of United states(GPUS) is the most popular and prominent one. However, it should be noted that both the parties had a common origin. Environment development is one of the main objectives of GPUS that distinguishes it from other political parties all over the world. Apart from this, their other objectives include maintaining social justice, peace, non-violence, respect for diversity and ecological wisdom.

Due to its unique objective GPUS has got a huge number of supporters and followers from every corner of the world. Also, Green party of the US provides a good platform for youngsters who are interested in working for the development of the environment. GPUS has conducted numerous activities for the development of the environment which include afforestation and preventing deforestation and environmental pollution. Another important unique quality to be mentioned about GPUS is that they never accept donations from corporations which evidently shows that they are not one among the corrupted group of politicians.

Success of the GPUS

GPUS has been successful as a Global party by sharing out the message of saving our precious environment. In fact they are the only party around the globe who have been successful in making people realize the importance of protecting our environment. GPUS is presently governed by a central governing body known as “ The Green National Committee” (GNC). GNC is responsible for organizing and managing all the national party functions and appoints a steering committee to look in to day-to-day functions.

With the atmospheric pollution rising day by day, we are badly in need of a relief from this polluted environment. Harmful gases released from vehicles are regarded as one of the important causes of air pollution. This can be greatly curbed to some extend by using environmentally friendly cars. Those cars can reduce the pollution to some extent by not allowing the harmful gases to be released into the environment. Even the materials used in manufacturing these cars are eco-friendly. They are mostly powered by alternative energy resources such as hydrogen, natural gas or electric batteries that emit less polluted gases.

However, with the invention of biodiesel most of the green vehicles are nowadays powered using it. Most of the chemically prepared fuels are now being replaced by biodiesel for fueling environmentally friendly vehicles. Green vehicles also consume less energy while offering high efficiency as compared to normal vehicles. Environmentally friendly cars may also be classified into various types such as Cell powered cars, Hybrid electric cars and compressed air cars.

Solar powered Cars

From the above mentioned ones Hybrid electric powered vehicles are most widely used as it offers higher efficiency as compared to others. Even solar powered vehicles are being developed wherein solar panels will be placed on the roof of cars to harness solar energy. This solar powered cars will totally eliminate the use of non-renewable energy resources for fueling purposes.
